Mirror Data Portraits: An Abstract Selfie

Activity 1

A reference image of the replit portrait from the in-class tutorials. Playing around with the replit portrait from the in-class tutorials. A reference image of drawing your own selfie with personal data from Giorgia Lupi's perspective. A reference image of drawing your own selfie with personal data from Giorgia Lupi's perspective. A reference image of one of my classmate's abstract selfie. Prompt: Add dots to indicate your age. Prompt: Drawing a line of color to indicate my background.
(Yellow: North America)
(Grey: Asia) Prompt: Draw and colour a triangle to indicate that I see things with a glass half-full. Prompt: Add a black circle if I'm a night owl. Add a yellow circle if you're a morning person. Add both circles if you're both. Prompt: Draw black lines to indicate what time your bedtime is and yellow lines to indicate what time you wake up at. Prompt: Add a blue circle if you sing in the shower. Prompt: Add a comma if you're a dog person or a bracket if you're a cat person. Prompt: Add dots to indicate how many pets you've had. Prompt: Add a yellow triangle if you use an iPhone or a green triangle if you use an Android phone. Prompt: Add a line atop the triangle to indicate where you place your phone. (It's usually near
the bottom of my bed since the charger is near there) Prompt: Draw a zigzag with either a pencil or a pen. Prompt: Draw a moon facing upwards if you're an extrovert or draw the moon downwards if
you're an introvert. Prompt: Add a grey squiggle if you like to relax or a green squiggle if you're more adventurous. Prompt: Add lines on the left side of the canvas to indicate your value of friends and money. I put my finished abstract portrait in black and white to see how it would look in its form
as a silhouette. Here I was pondering on what could be grouped together for my p5js. Here I played around with the facial tracking in p5js. It was wonky, but it worked. Here I played around with the facial tracking in p5js but with different groupings of the
shapes and lines. I put my finished abstract portrait as linework to see how it would be as simple outlines instead
of flat colours. I realize that colour adds to personality and data, so this idea was scrapped quickly. A reference image of an organic 3D model in relation to abstract portraits. A reference image of the Head of David sculpt. Here I looked at how the shadows are blocked to add to form
and personality (in terms of expression).

Activity 2

Scanning from Real World to Digital

A plushie I share with my close friend. A top view of my bracelet. My bracelet. I included this angle for reference that there is more than one button for wrist sizes. A personal locket. The back angle of my personal locket. I included this to show gaps in the lock. My Lego boombox to represent my fondness for music and retro musical technology. A side angle of my Lego boombox and my Lego skateboard. My Lego boombox and my Lego skateboard put together to represent my skater/street aesthetic growing up. My Lego skateboard to represent my fondness for Lego and riding on my old skateboard around my neighbourhood. A 3D scan of the locket propped up. Scanning it flat made the lock less clear. My skull ring to represent my fondness for the gothic or edgy aesthetics. A side view of my skull ring. A failed scan of my skull ring. The back part was merged with the floor. A failed scan of my skull ring even when propped up. The back part was merged with the support. The back of my skull ring. The ring itself seemed too thin to be able to be scanned properly. A test scan of my classmate's figurine. A 3D scan of my bracelet propped up. A test scan of my Lego pieces. It seems that working with smaller figures does not go ideally as I'd expect. A 3D scan of my plushie. Using Scaniverse's cropping feature (Which was really fun!). Using Meshmixer's polygon filling mode. I had to delete the areas that did not need the polygons closed. A low-poly image of my plushie. The initial wireframe of my plushie imported from Meshmixer to Cinema4D. This looked horrendous. Using the polygon-reduction tool in Cinema4D. A low-poly image of my plushie without the textures.

Reflexive Workshop 1 & 2

Group Member: Kei

Notes on Reflexivity's Importance:
- Reflexive research helps to define who the research is affected by,
who the researchers are, their individual beliefs and their upbringing.
- After you do qualitative research on something, you can start being reflexive--meaning
that the researchers (you) start judging your own beliefs, judgments, and upbringing.
- A researcher’s bias will affect the research indirectly.
Group Member: Lilith (Me!)

What to Look for in Reflexive Work:
- Background
- Relationships with peers or studies
- Values, morals, and beliefs
- What you do when making decisions
- What you do when you are confused or stuck
Gathering these pieces of information impacts these types of research findings.
There is no right or wrong answer, due to reflexive work being grounded on personal experiences. Group Member: Eric

Researchers themselves can - and unintentionally will - affect research results from the very start.
Stuff like one’s upbringing or what that person's obsessions are would affect
what results the research would get; and probably from the very start too.
My avid fixation on financial impacts led me to make this personal portrait.

Project 3

Final Project 3 Design

3D models of my self-representational objects.

Bunny Plushie

Alternative Title: Comfortable

A representation of my shared comfort atop a stable, tapered foundation. This item is a gift from my closest friend.

Video Game Plushie

Alternative Title: Little Gambler

A representation of my spending habits tied with consumerism atop a precarious foundation with a wider top. It's as if it can hold more space for more items.

Car Model

Alternative Title: Adrenaline on Wheels

A representation of one of my childhood fixations influenced by my family. This item rests atop a strong foundation.
